Report of the Summer Show 2 JUNE 2018

A successful and enjoyable event well supported by the public who attended in good numbers. Enough iris had survived blustery weather to see most classes entered on the day, although the tall bearded were fewer and a little bruised in some cases. A fine ‘Silverado’ did get ‘best in show’, whilst the beardless and species iris entries were ever attractive in their range and finer detail. Visitors packed out the afternoon talk on 'growing bearded and beardless iris' and the display stands drew lots of interest. So too, the nursery, Woottens of Wenhaston, bringing along some fine plants and seen to enjoy every minute. Hopefully we'll see more members enter the Shows and continuing collaboration with nurseries.

Late Spring Show 28 April 2018 at RHS Wisley
The weather has been woeful for the start of this year, so we did worry just what might flower on the day! Yet, somehow, it all came good. Visitors enjoyed the delicate miniature iris blooms, ever pretty and petite, so too the splendid species iris shown by the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens and, not least, the stunning artistic exhibits by Society members. The talk on ‘Growing iris through the year’ sparked much interest, as did the stands manned by the enthusiastic iris Groups. Plant sales were brisk and a specialist nursery plans to be at the main Summer Show on 2 June at RHS Wisley. Do come along!

The Early Spring Show was highly successful this year. Held at Pembroke Lodge, Richmond on 11 February there were more exhibits than ever and Alan McMurtie talk was well received. Our President Brian Mathew introduced Alan and presented the trophies. A fuller report with all the names of the winners will appear in the Year Book
